Asia Meets Europe

From 5-6 November, the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit will take place in Vientiane, Laos. Find out more about ASEM here. In class tomorrow, we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to hear a special briefing on ASEM and the Summit from our colleague, the Consul-General. The relations between Asia and Europe are often overlooked, given the presence of the US in the region, but it is important to consider these links, especially in the context of the current economic difficulties in Europe and the increasing desire in Europe to develop ties with Asia.

The Consul General gave a very informative talk about ASEM. It was interesting to learn about the history, dynamics, and purpose of this forum. Based on his lecture and the ASEM web site, it seems to me that the European nations have a fairly good grasp of how the Asian culture/mindset works; and, have been successful in developing a forum that is compatible with ASEAN. ASEM provides Asian nations with a platform, that engenders mutual respect, from which to be heard. Is Washington taking note?
